Press Club, Kolkata deeply mourns the sad demise of veteran Journalist, Poet, Writer and retired senior officer of Indian Information Service, and Member of the Club, BIREN SAHA, who breathed his last at a Private Nursing Home in Kolkata, this afternoon on 01 December 2020.
He was 79 years of age and is survived by his wife and daughter, among other members in the family.
He retired as Addl. Director General in the Ministry Information & Broadcasting after serving in various capacities in different media units under the Ministry of I&B in different parts of the country.
He worked as the Head of News in Doordarshan and All India Radio, Kolkata and Head of Press Information Bureau, Kolkata.
He was also the Editor of Dhana Dhanny magazine of the Ministry. He also served at the General News Room (GNR) of the News Services Division, All India Radio, New Delhi, as a young officer.
He was an alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata and did his Masters in Bengali Literature from Calcutta University.
He undertook professional training in Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi and Thomson Foundation, among other places.
He was also associated with different media training institutions as a guest faculty.
He was an established poet and writer and has several publications in his credit.
His seminal research work on travel literature in Bengali was praiseworthy.
He was the President of the Behala unit of the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan.
As he hailed from Cooch Behar in North Bengal, his many literary pursuits also depicted the beauty and people of North Bengal.
He remained highly active in his professional and literary works till he was admitted to the nursing home, around a week ago.
